"It is obvious that any therapeutic procedure which arouses as much cyclic enthusiasm as hypnosis does must have some intrinsic values. Yet obviously there are certain elements inherent in the practice of hypnosis that cause its periodic demise. What these factors may be certainly merits exploration, if for no other reason than to assign to hypnosis a more secure place in the catalogue of accepted therapies. Research and carefully evaluated studies might conceivably help to avert the imminent discrediting of hypnosis, for there is no reason to assume that the present favorable trend toward its acceptance will not be followed by another decline in popularity."
